CHAPTER 16

A s the first rays of sunlight streaked across the cityscape, I strolled into the familiar confines of the office. The morning was still young, and the office was quiet, the gentle hum of computers and the distant thrum of photocopiers providing the only soundtrack. A welcome surprise awaited me on my usually sparse desk: a sleek, to-go cup filled with a dark liquid and a small, unassuming brown paper sack stamped with a coffeehouse logo. The curious sight had my attention, but the scent that hit my nose sealed the deal. It was a rich, deep aroma, a fragrance that suggested a promise of caffeine. It wasn't the familiar scent of tea that was a staple in this world. No, it was unmistakably the robust, alluring scent of coffee.

Barely able to contain my excitement, I picked up the cup, its warmth seeping through the container and into my hands. Lifting it to my nose, I took a deep breath, letting the hearty aroma of coffee beans mixed with something slightly sweet tickle my senses. Just as I was about to yield to the enticing call of caffeine and take a sip, a light giggle sounded behind me.

Turning, I was met with Hana, a mischievous sparkle lighting up her golden eyes. Her tail swished lightly behind her, mirroring the grin on her face. “So, how does your coffee smell, Kazuki?” she asked, a playful lilt to her voice. I chuckled, holding up the cup in a mock-toast. "Like a gift from the gods." Taking my first sip, I was greeted with the taste of deep-roasted beans with a hint of caramel. It was sublime. Hana looked pleased at my reaction, her grin widening.

No sooner had I swallowed than another voice joined in. “Have you peeked into your bag yet?” Momo sauntered over, a teasing glint in her eye. With her reminder, I turned my attention to the paper bag. Inside, I found a large, decadent chocolate chip cookie nestled at the bottom. The sight of it brought a smile to my face. I broke off a piece, the chocolate chips melting in my mouth as I bit into it.

The look on Momo’s face when I hummed in satisfaction was worth all the gold in the world. She looked triumphant, her cheeks flushed in delight. With a swift change of topic, Momo casually asked, “So, we’re still on for dinner tonight, right?”

Taken aback for a moment, I quickly recovered. "Of course!" I replied enthusiastically, swallowing quickly. "What time should I be there?"

"7:30 PM sharp," Hana quickly provided. She promised to text me the address, and I couldn't help but notice the twin flicks of their tails, a sure sign of their excitement for the evening ahead.

Casual conversation resumed, leading them to inquire about my previous evening. "Well, I just watched some anime with Rebecca," I stated nonchalantly. The simultaneous reactions from both of them was as entertaining as it was unexpected. Their expressions morphed from delight to shock in a blink.
